LARAMIE, Wyo. – A one-time serial robber suspected of robbing Redwood CU in California last month and several banks throughout the northwest was arrested yesterday on the highway here.
David Hurwitz - who was known as the "Zombie Bandit" for a Midwest robbery spree in the 1990s - was stopped by state troopers on Interstate 80 after police in Oregon developed information that he was in Wyoming.
Investigators suspect Hurwitz, 67, in a Dec. 11 robbery at the Redwood CU in San Rafael, a Dec. 12 bank robbery in Palo Alto, a Dec. 22 bank robbery in Santa Rosa, and possibly other heists.
Hurwitz served about 12 years in prison after a conviction for a series of bank robberies in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio in the 1990s. He reportedly robbed the banks to support a crack cocaine habit and earned his "Zombie" nickname because of his mumbling and blank demeanor.
