Awarding teachers who make a difference
Westerly Community CU, Westerly, R.I., awarded 12 WCCU Teacher Grant Awards for the 2016-17 school year, totaling more than $5,000. Grants were awarded to local teachers or staff from the Chariho, Narragansett, South Kingstown, Stonington and Westerly school districts.

Merrimack Valley CU, Lawrence, Mass., made its 11th annual Corporate Partnership contribution to Haverhill-based Emmaus, Inc., this time $30,000. The CU is Emmaus’ largest private corporate donor.

Assisting fire victims
Redwood CU, Santa Rosa, Calif., helped the Lower Lake community with a pasta feed and holiday event sponsored by RCU’s Lake County Fire Victims Fund (part of Redwood Credit Union Community Fund, Inc.), which raised $265,000 to assist victims of the Clayton Fire.

Mitten tree
WESTconsin CU, Menomonie, Wis., hosted its annual The Mitten Tree campaign to collect winter apparel and accessories and monetary donations for those in need as winter’s sub-zero temperatures set in. It brought in 2,250 winter apparel and accessory items and $2,747.46.

South Jersey FCU, Deptford, N.J., donated $5,000 to “Boro in Lights,” an annual holiday celebration and tree lighting hosted by the community of Glassboro and Rowan University.

Member One FCU, Roanoke, Va., kicked off the holiday season by sponsoring and participating in three Christmas parades in its footprint, including being the returning title sponsor of the Vinton, Va., Christmas parade.

New Horizons CU, Mobile, Ala., won the first place Dora Maxwell Award for credit unions in its asset division from the League of Southeastern CUs for being the main sponsor of the Hi-Q Academic Competition since 1986, and being part of the Vita Tax Program through United Way.
