John Buckley, president and CEO of Gerber FCU, Fremont, Mich., read the Judith Viorst book “Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday” to second grade students at local schools and the CU donated a total of 650 books to a number of schools.

Louisiana FCU gives back

Staff members of Louisiana FCU LaPlace, La., and their families, raised funds and awareness at Relay for Life of St. James. In addition to sponsoring the event and selling lemonade at the relay, Louisiana FCU hosted a sweet auction. The annual sweet auction brought in $3,415 in one hour. In total, the credit union raised $7,998.41 for the American Cancer Society.

Educating thousands of students

Robins Financial CU, Warner Robins, Ga., continues to partner with local high schools and colleges to deliver financial literacy education. In 2016, Robins Financial partnered with 26 schools, offering financial education classes in 550 classrooms to 10,000 students.

In conjunction with coloring, poster and essay contests, Neighbors FCU organized the workshop to help children and young adults learn the purpose of money, saving, spending and giving.

Scholarships awarded

Pen Air FCU, Pensacola, Fla., established a new scholarship program to help its student members. This year, five scholarship recipients were selected and honored at the CU’s 81st Annual Business Meeting. The amount awarded per scholarship is up to $10,000, for up to eight semesters depending on the degree pursed.
