Giving students a head start: Credit unions in the community

Books for kids
John Buckley, president and CEO of Gerber FCU, Fremont, Mich., read the Judith Viorst book “Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday” to second grade students at local schools and the CU donated a total of 650 books to a number of schools.
Louisiana FCU gives back
Staff members of Louisiana FCU LaPlace, La., and their families, raised funds and awareness at Relay for Life of St. James. In addition to sponsoring the event and selling lemonade at the relay, Louisiana FCU hosted a sweet auction. The annual sweet auction brought in $3,415 in one hour. In total, the credit union raised $7,998.41 for the American Cancer Society.
Educating thousands of students
Robins Financial CU, Warner Robins, Ga., continues to partner with local high schools and colleges to deliver financial literacy education. In 2016, Robins Financial partnered with 26 schools, offering financial education classes in 550 classrooms to 10,000 students.
Money-saving tricks
Quincy CU, Quincy, Mass., teamed up with the Weymouth Public Library to teach children some tricks to save money with “The Magic of Money” featuring Joe the Magician.
Naveo's new digs and scholarships
Somerville, Mass.-based Naveo CU celebrated the grand reopening of its Cambridge branch with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and cocktail reception. Separately, Naveo awarded four scholarships of $1,000 each to local students.
'Quest for Education'
Vantage CU, Bridgton, Mo., awarded $1,000 Quest for Education Scholarships to 20 area high school seniors.
'Kids & Cash' workshop
Neighbors FCU, Baton Rouge, La., hosted a “Kids & Cash” workshop at the East Baton Rouge Parish Library Main Branch. In conjunction with coloring, poster and essay contests, Neighbors FCU organized the workshop to help children and young adults learn the purpose of money, saving, spending and giving.
CENT's new facilities
CENT Credit Union held grand opening events in Mason City, Iowa, to introduce the community to its two new properties, The CENTer (its new headquarters) and CENT WestSide.
'70 Years of We'
Northwest FCU, Herndon, Va., welcomed members to its annual Member Appreciation Day event as part of its year-long “70 Years of We” celebration. Despite the rainy weather, more than 400 members attended, enjoying free food, carnival games and more.
Scholarships awarded
Pen Air FCU, Pensacola, Fla., established a new scholarship program to help its student members. This year, five scholarship recipients were selected and honored at the CU’s 81st Annual Business Meeting. The amount awarded per scholarship is up to $10,000, for up to eight semesters depending on the degree pursed.
Top workplace
Since 2008, Greater Nevada CU, Carson City, Nev., has participated in and been recognized as one of the best places to work in northern Nevada. This year the credit union was named the top employer, and the only financial institution, in the large business category.
Pioneer Center donation
Great Lakes CU, Bannockburn, Ill., continued its initiative to support its communities with a $3,000 donation to the Pioneer Center for Human Services in McHenry.
