Veronica Kelly, a season ticketholder for Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia Union, combined her artistic skills and passion for soccer to win $500 in the 2017 Philadelphia Union Card Design Contest held jointly with TruMark Financial CU, Fort Washington, Pa.

March for Babies

Several members of Pleasanton, Calif,-based Patelco CU participated in the East Bay March of Dimes’ March for Babies Walk. The CU served as a gold sponsor via a $10,000 donation. Event highlights included a 5K run/walk and Super Hero Sprint for kids, all in support of March of Dimes, the national non-profit that works to improve the health of mothers and babies.

CU4Kids donation

The members and staff of Veritas FCU, Smyrna, Tenn., raised $1,510 over three months for its first ever donation to CU4Kids. Veritas plans for this to become an annual fundraiser to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Entrepreneurship Club aid

NuMark CU, Joliet, Ill., is helping Entrepreneurship Club students at Rockdale Elementary in a number of ways. The Club is a partnership between local businesses and schools for children grades 6-8. NuMark CFO and VP of Finance Debbie Reed served as a business advisor to the club, attending after school meetings and helping students during the project process.

$6,000 in scholarships

U.S. Eagle FCU, Albuquerque, N.M., awarded three scholarships of $2,000 each. Students had to submit an essay, application, letters of recommendation and community service initiatives.

Annual HS banquet

America First CU, Riverdale, Utah, held its annual high school scholarship banquet to honor students for academic and student athlete achievements. In conjunction with the KJZZ Thursday Night Lights sponsorship, the third annual event recognized eight students and each was presented with a $500 check and honorary plaque.

Donations and awards

United FCU, St. Joseph, Mich., made a $2,800 donation to The Children’s Cabinet in Reno, which serves 11,000 families each year by providing programs and services including food and shelter, crisis intervention, and more. Separately, UFCU took first place in the Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Outreach Award competition for Michigan for its sponsorship of the 2016 Berrien County Girls on the Run program.

Celebrating foster parents

America’s Christian CU filled its headquarters in Glendora, Calif., with community partners who have committed to make a difference in the lives of foster youth, underserved academic communities and the homeless. ACCU donated $2,500 each to Neighborhood Homework House and Serenity Adoption, Inc., to support their community-changing work.

Scholarships and ribbon cuttings

Hanscom FCU, Hanscom AFB, Mass., recognized seven high school students with college scholarships. Five credit union members and two students from local Air Force Junior ROTC units each received $1,500 toward college expenses. Separately, the CU celebrated its new branch in Billerica with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Ninth annual shred day

Greylock FCU, Pittsfield, Mass., held its ninth annual Community Shred Day and shredded seven tons of paper. The effort also raised $1,184 in donations for the Berkshire United Way. The CU suggested a $1 donation per box from people looking to dispose of personal documents.

ASI Federal Credit Union, Harahan, La., created products and services designed specifically to start youth on the right track to savings success. Members entered a raffle where four young savers received gift cards to Toys R Us.

Advantage One CU, Brownstown, Mich., awarded three local area students with $2,500 academic scholarships. One was the CU’s newest scholarship, created in memory of Ronald Stamper, a longtime director.
