Providing beds for needy kids

Naveo CU, Somerville, Mass., hosted Tuck the Bear, mascot for the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless’ A Bed for Every Child program, at its branches for one month. Naveo raised $1,000 to benefit the program, which provided four beds for children in need.

Play it forward

The Partnership FCU collected more than $3,200 in donations of toys and games for patients at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. The Center asked the CU for help to fill new inpatient toy carts. These small carts, funded solely by donations, provide patients with easier access to toys and games from their rooms.

A helping hand for educators

Vantage CU, Bridgeton, Mo., which has its roots in education, awarded $500 to Jessica Clements, winner of the CU’s educator drawing. Clements, a teacher at Warrior Ridge Elementary School in Warrenton, was selected from nearly 375 entries. She plans to use the funds to purchase books for intervention students.

Andrews FCU, Suitland, Md., partnered with Anacostia-AMP Outreach & Empowerment Center, a nonprofit based in the historic Anacostia neighborhood of Washington, D.C., for its first annual community dinner and coat giveaway.

PenFed Foundation benefits wounded warriors

Tysons, Va.-based Pentagon FCU’s charitable arm, the PenFed Foundation, and nonprofit Serve Our Willing Warriors broke ground on a retreat home for wounded warriors: the Warrior Retreat at Bull Run. The PenFed Foundation’s $300,000 donation to SOWW will cover construction costs. PenFed hosted a party for its Puerto Rico employees and their families at Fort Buchanan. After Hurricanes Irma and Maria, PenFed provided an aid package for every employee.

Grand View Health Foundation donation

Philadelphia-based American Heritage CU donated $50,000 to the Grand View Health Foundation. The donation will provide support to the foundation’s Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Service. American Heritage said it plans to revamp support to local area hospitals in its Workplace Partner Program in its near future.

Coming soon: New digs

Raleigh, N.C.-based Coastal CU broke ground on its newest location in Holly Springs, its first in the city. Coastal’s Board Chair Joan Nelson and CEO Chuck Purvis were joined by Holly Springs Assistant Town Manager Daniel Weeks and Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce CEO Scott Manning. La Macchia Group is Coastal’s design-build partner for the project.

Belco Community CU, Harrisburg, Pa., donated $1,000 to the Mission Central, a nonprofit organization based in Mechanicsburg Pa., that is a global mission warehouse for disaster relief and connection resources.

Honolulu-based Hawaii State FCU’s Kai branch received the prestigious Design Award from the Building Industry Association. NewGround, the CU’s design-build partner for this project, honored the credit union for being recognized with this highly coveted award.

Remembering those who died in Sept. 11, 2001

Utah Healing Field is an annual event that honors the nearly 3,000 people who died in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Each year, flags for each victim are displayed at Sandy City Hall during the week of Sept. 11. Proceeds from flag sales and sponsorships for the Utah Healing Field are donated to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. As a sponsor of this event, Mountain America CU, West Jordan, Utah, presented several flags to local history teachers.
