Saving dozens of lives

Firefly CU, Burnsville, Minn., partnered with Memorial Blood Centers to host a blood drive. Donors gave 16 whole blood cell units, which have the potential to save up to 48 lives.

Emergency relief donation

St. Joseph, Mich.-based United FCU donated $5,000 to Interfaith Assistance Ministry to assist the organization in providing emergency relief to residents of Henderson County, N.C., who are in financial crisis by offering food, clothing, funds for utility bills and rent, budget guidance, and referrals in an atmosphere of compassion and respect.

Making mortgages easier

The home buying process can be daunting for many people, but Pelican State CU, Baton Rouge, La., helped prove it does not need to be. Pelican put on a Financial Wellness Workshop focused on the home buying process for members and interested residents from Zachary and Jackson. As with all of Pelican’s community events, this workshop was free and open to the public.

Shoes for kids in need

San Antonio-based Security Service FCU and its Charitable Foundation presented “In His Steps” Shoe Bank of McAllen, Texas, with a $10,000 donation that will be used to purchase up to 400 pairs of shoes for children in need.

They wear because they care

The employees of Pen Air FCU, Pensacola, Fla., celebrated giving more than $200,000 to local nonprofits since 2013, when its Jeans for Communerosity program began. They celebrated the milestone though “I Wear Because I Care” week through various events and activities, including a puppy kissing booth with SouthBARK Animal Rescue.

Hiway FCU, St. Paul, Minn., inspired youth hockey teams throughout Minnesota to use the same teamwork so important for success on the ice to help kids with serious health conditions through a program that raised nearly $10,000 for Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare in Saint Paul.

Patelco CU, Pleasanton, Calif., donated $78,000 to each of three Santa Rosa charities: Ceres Community Project, Redwood Empire Food Bank and Catholic Charities of Santa Rosa.

Celebrating 25 years

Del-One FCU, Dover, Del., formed a new partnership with the Biggs Museum of American Art entitled “Quarters for Kids” to help celebrate the Museum’s 25th Anniversary year in 2018. To kick off the program, Del-One donated $10,000 to the Biggs Museum to fund special programs and field trips at the museum for underserved children and families.

America First goes back to school

As part of its Greater Good Project, Riverdale, Utah-based America First CU visited Gibson Middle School in Las Vegas to promote financial literacy. America First employees led 12 classes, a total of 383 students, in playing the “bean game.”
