Noah Lehman was randomly selected as the winner of the “Why I Love BayFed Sweepstakes” by Bay FCU, Capitola, Calif. “I love Bay Federal because they are local and it makes me feel like I’m helping the community more than if I were to give my money to a bigger, national bank,” Lehman’s entry said.

Unsung heroes

CorePlus CU, Norwich, Conn., held its 8th “Unsung Heroes Recognition” event on WINY 1350AM Radio. Listeners call in to name an “unsung hero” in their community or someone who had a special impact on their life. For every call received, CorePlus donated $25 to a local charity of the caller’s choice, in the hero’s name. This year’s total was $3,400.

Partnership to benefit fire victims

The North Bay Fire Relief Fund, a partnership of Santa Rosa, Calif.-based Redwood CU, The Press Democrat newspaper and California state Sen. Mike McGuire, collected and distributed $32 million from 41,100 donors to support immediate needs of fire victims following the devastating fires that impacted Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino and Lake Counties in October 2017.

Taking action on hunger

Northeast CU, Portsmouth, N.H., supported Hunger Action Month by collecting donations in all 20 of its branches. The New Hampshire Food Bank and the Good Shepherd Food Bank of Maine worked with NECU to collect the items and distribute to local food pantries.

Chartway FCU, Virginia Beach, Va., sent 27 members of its board and leadership team for a day volunteering with American Red Cross Greater Houston. The CU also donated $50,000.

Northwest FCU, Herndon, Va., held its annual employee Benefits and Wellness Fair, which focused on supporting employee health and the healthcare needs of the community. This year’s fair included a blood drive with Inova Blood Donor Services and a $1,000 donation to Step Sisters, a local breast cancer support organization.

Georgia United CU, Duluth, Ga., teamed up with Q100’s The Bert Show to sponsor Bert’s “Big Thank You” program. The Bert Show thanks members of the military by sending 1 million hand-written letters to military service men and women deployed outside the United States.

Mountain View, Calif.-based First Tech FCU opened a new branch in Sammamish, Wash., its seventh branch in the greater Seattle area. The new location follows First Tech's branch-of-the-future design, using open meeting spaces to foster a culture of relationship-based transactions.

Elevations helps raise millions for scholarships

For the 14th consecutive year, Elevations CU, Boulder, Colo., served as the title sponsor for the Buffalo Bicycle Classic bike ride. This year’s event raised $185,000 for the University of Colorado’s College of Arts and Sciences. In all, the event has raised nearly $3.5 million and awarded more than 1,400 scholarships to outstanding CU students.

Desjardins honors for People's CU

People's CU, Middletown, R.I., won first place in Rhode Island for the Desjardins Financial Education Award in the $250 million to $1 billion asset category for its partnership with North Kingstown High School. People's CU sponsors the Rhode Island Financial Scholars Program.
