Excellence in Education award
Northwest FCU, Herndon, Va., presented the 2017 NWFCU Excellence in Education award to DePorres Place in Palm Beach County, Fla. DePorres Place offers basic language curricula, citizenship classes, help with drivers’ license testing, and, more recently, projects promoting health and financial literacy.
Heritage Trust gives back
Summerville, S.C.-based Heritage Trust FCU and the Medical University of South Carolina teamed up to offer a second community educational workshop on the financial and health care sides of End of Life Planning. Separately, the CU continued its support of the employees and families of Joint Base Charleston by participating in the base picnic.
Adopt-a-classroom
Sioux Falls FCU, Sioux Falls, S.D., awarded $500 Adopt-A-Classroom grants to six local teachers to help cover necessary, non-salary expenses to fund their classrooms.
Firefly's scholarships
Firefly CU, Burnsville, Minn., awarded more than $5,000 in scholarships to Burnsville and Rosemount High School seniors during the 2016-17 academic year. Scholarships were awarded for both Firefly’s third annual Great Savings Challenge and a Community Cares Scholarship.
Thorp scholarship
GCS Credit Union, Granite City, Ill., awarded the $2,000 Nicole R. Thorp Scholarship to Madeline Sheridan of Granite City Senior High School.

How Vizo helps kids
Vizo Financial Corporate CU, Middletown, Pa., and Credit Unions for Kids partnered to raise money and gather volunteers from Pittsburgh CUs for the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation’s second annual Walk for Children’s event, which raised $787,520.
Thanking first responders
Local Government FCU, Raleigh, N.C., in partnership with the NC Association of County Commissioners and the NC League of Municipalities, recognized first responders and firefighters who helped to extinguish one of the worst fires to hit Raleigh in 90 years. The quick actions of the first responders limited the damage done to the Quorum Center, LGFCU’s headquarters, and the Albert Coates Local Government Center.
#SliceOfLife
Consumers CU, Kalamazoo, Mich., presented an interactive financial education experience to more than 60 Portage Central High School juniors and seniors. The financial reality fair #SliceOfLife gave students a hands-on, engaging experience with the realities of budgeting.
Elementary school fundraiser
Austin-based Greater Texas CU raised a total of $1,290 for Oak Spring Elementary School through employee and member fundraising. The effort will help rebuild the school’s playground, which was set on fire earlier this year.
Walk Home for the Homeless
Nearly 200 walkers, volunteers and staff participated in Waltham, Mass.-based RTN Federal Credit Union’s 7th annual Walk Home for the Homeless. RTN has raised more $140,000 since the inception of Walk Home in 2011.
