CU at the Zoo!

In Jackson, Miss., the 3rd Annual CU at the Zoo event drew a record crowd of 4,500 guests at the Jackson Zoo. The credit unions of Mississippi paid for more than 2,500 guests to attend the event for free. The CUs were on site to offer financial literacy resources for youth and more.

Improving the local ambulance fleet

St. Lawrence FCU, Ogdensburg, N.Y., made the first installment on its three-year, $5,000 donation to the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad’s Annual Appeal. The $1,700 donation will be used to improve the Rescue Squad’s aging ambulance fleet.

Watchdog Dealers of the Year

Space Coast CU, Melbourne, Fla., honored six local auto dealers with its Watchdog Dealer of the Year award, recognizing the superior service they provided to SCCU members in 2016. The award, which has been presented annually to local dealers since 2009, is calculated based on SCCU member survey ratings and total loan volume generated during the year prior.

Sioux Falls FCU, Sioux Falls, S.D., partnered with Daktronics to provide a new LED video feature to the CU’s high-traffic location on South Louise Avenue. The display was installed in spring to bring advertising and messaging opportunities to a prime location within the city.

Food pantry donation

Hopewell FCU, Heath, Ohio, offered its support to the Food Pantry Network of Licking County for its Operation Feed campaign. Members and staff collected 289 lbs. of food, plus cash donations totaling nearly $1,200.

Nine employees of LBS Financial CU, Long Beach, Calif., volunteered at the Long Beach Rescue Mission to serve a warm lunch for those in need and assist the staff.

The FinLit 300

Members First CU, Manchester, N.H., helped sponsor the FinLit 300 NH Financial Capability Challenge, a tournament that is part of the NH Jump$tart Coalition K-12 financial literacy program. It tests high school students’ knowledge and skill in various personal finance topics. MFCU CEO Bruce Leighton served as one of the judges for the tournament.

Necessities for those in need

People's CU, Middletown, R.I., donated $700 to the Jonnycake Center, which provides basic necessities for local people in need. The funds were raised through a combination of employee donations totaling $425 for a monthly dress down day plus $275 from a Red Sox-themed raffle.

Red Cross donation

Credit Union 1, Anchorage, Alaska, raised a record $12,365.84 in a single month for the American Red Cross of Alaska, which was part of $40,278 raised for local nonprofits in one quarter. The CU also participated in the Financial Reality Foundation’s Get REAL Financial Reality Fairs and more, as CU1 employees volunteered 1,282 hours.

Greater Texas supports local schools

Jill McNabb, regional branch manager for Austin-based Greater Texas CU, demonstrated the credit union’s dedication to supporting local schools by participating in the Bastrop ISD Career Day and Employer Panel at Bastrop High School.

Stopping distracted driving

In Carlisle, Pa., employees of Cornerstone FCU selected the One More Day Foundation, which raises awareness about the negative effects of distracted driving, as the CU’s latest charity of choice. The CU donated $750 at the charity’s A Run With My Angel 5K held in Mechanicsburg. Twelve Cornerstone employees helped support the cause by running or walking.

CMN and the Boston Marathon

Hanscom FCU, Hanscom AFB, Mass., raised more than $31,000 for Boston Children’s Hospital at the 2017 Boston Marathon. This is the 18th year the credit union has participated in the race. Hanscom also hosted 100 students for its CU 4 Reality fair.
