Orion and the eclipse

Memphis-based Orion FCU donated 10,000 eclipse viewing glasses to its 13 adopted local schools. The glasses, made by American Paper Optics in Bartlett, Tenn., were used for safe viewing of the solar eclipse on Aug. 21.

Member Appreciation Day

ABNB Federal Credit Union hosted its annual Member Appreciation Day on the front lawn of the corporate office in Chesapeake, Va. More than 700 members and their families attended. Separately, the CU’s investment services program, ABNB Financial, received the 2016 Gold Impact Award for Branch Networking from CUSO Financial Services L.P.

United stays platinum

United FCU, St. Joseph, Mich., served as a gold-level sponsor of the 2017 Knights of Columbus Memorial Golf Tournament that raised more than $2,200 for the Catholic Community Center in Benton Harbor, Mich. Separately, UFCU once again is supporting the Play for GateWay Softball Tournament. United is the only platinum-level sponsor in the tournament’s 32-year history.

Nonprofit donation

Employees of TruStone Financial FCU, Plymouth, Minn., raised $670 for the Hope Council on Alcohol & Other Drug Abuse, a nonprofit based in Kenosha, Wis. A dollar-for-dollar match of funds by the TruStone Financial Foundation allowed for a total donation of $1,340.

Vizo Financial Corporate CU, Middletown, Pa., celebrated National Hot Dog Day by holding its annual Hot Dog Eating Contest. This year's event raised $2,000 for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

Indiana Members Foundation, the charitable arm of Indiana Members CU, Indianapolis, hosted its 2017 Grant Recipient Awards Banquet and awarded $34,500 in grants through its Robert E. Martin Collegiate Scholarship Program and Joan Wolfe Legacy Grant Program.

Kiwanis Club donation

People's CU, Middletown, R.I., donated nearly $700 to the Kiwanis Club of Aquidneck Island. The funds were raised through an employee dress down day, called Casual for a Cause, as well as bake sales over the course of one month in the CU’s Middletown and Newport branches.

A dog-gone good cause

Employees of GCS Credit Union, Granite City, Ill., raised $922 in one month to benefit the Clinton County Humane Society. Since 2008, the Clinton County Humane Society has helped 781 animals be adopted.

Staff from RTN Federal Credit Union, Waltham, Mass., scooped and served popcorn and hosted an information table as a business sponsor of the Tewksbury Police Department’s National Night Out Against Crime. More than 100 people from the community enjoyed a classic car show, free cookout and games, and rocked out with Jumpin Juba.

NorthRidge Community CU, Hoyt Lakes, Minn., concluded its Third Annual Fill the Pool food drive and said it was a great success for each branch. The CU’s members donated bags, boxes and even cases of food, as well as cash donations. This year saw record participation.

Firefly celebrates employees and marketing successes

Firefly CU, Burnsville, Minn., celebrated its annual employee appreciation month with a “Great Outdoors” theme. Separately, Firefly took home eight awards for excellence in marketing from the Marketing Association of Credit Unions. After its new name and a branding overhaul, Firefly received a gold award for its new retail merchandising strategy, two silver awards for the general rebrand and new logo, and a bronze award for its brand reveal video.

Yorktown, Va.-based 1st Advantage FCU celebrated the grand opening of its 15th branch, this one in in the Virginia Beach Town Center. It marks the expansion of 1st Advantage’s service area to include all of the Hampton Roads market and select areas of North Carolina.

Ladies on the gridiron

Employees from America First CU, Riverdale, Utah, participated in the 11th annual Utah State University Ladies Football Clinic. Hosted by Aggie football coaching staff and sponsored by America First, the clinic gives women the opportunity to participate in football drills and informative lessons on technique, plays and fundamentals. This year, the popular clinic featured 150 participants and all proceeds were donated to the Intermountain Foundation at Logan Regional Hospital.

Pottstown, Pa.-based Diamond CU held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of its new branch in Limerick Township, Pa. The new branch will be Diamond’s 6th location and will be located at next to an Outback Steakhouse.

Greenwood Village, Colo.-based Bellco CU opened its 24th branch, this one in Longmont, Colo., at the Village at the Peaks outdoor shopping area. The 2,400-square-foot facility features one Express Teller Machine and 24-hour ATM access for self-service banking transactions.
