$50,000 over five years

Black Hills FCU, Rapid City, S.D., gave a commitment of $50,000 over five years to Rural America Initiatives, a non-profit organization serving Native American families in Rapid City. The funds will go to RAI’s capital campaign to replace the 20-year-old, worn-out and fully depreciated Head Start and Early Head Start buildings.

Firefly scholarships

Firefly CU, Burnsville, Minn., said two of its members were selected as winners of the Minnesota CU Foundation Scholarship Council’s 2017 scholarships. Out of nearly 600 applicants from credit unions across the state, Anne Kopas was awarded $1,000 and William Lopno was awarded $500 for higher education expenses.

Enterprising lender

Henrico FCU, Henrico, Va., earned the Enterprise Car Sales Bronze Award (Virginia Group) for used car sales volume in fiscal year 2016. The CU originated more than $250,000 in loans specific to Enterprise Used Car Sales.

What a performance!

San Diego County CU said Patrick Garcia of Scripps Ranch High School was named the Best Local Theatre Teacher at the Ben Vereen Awards. A total of 18 teachers were nominated and nearly 1,500 votes were submitted via the credit union's Facebook page.

Supporting the Women's Resource Center

Member One FCU, Roanoke, Va., donated $1,000 to the Women’s Resource Center of the New River Valley to support its mission of providing programs and services in the community. The donation was a result of Member One’s quarterly Denim Days for Charities, during which employees donate money in exchange for wearing jeans on a specific day.

Golf tournament helps fight cancer

Heritage Trust FCU, Summerville, S.C., hosted its 13th Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Golf Club at Wescott Plantation to benefit the American Cancer Society. This year’s tournament raised $17,000 and was dedicated to a 30-year employee of Heritage Trust who had recently lost her battle to cancer.

Teen investment scholarships

Earthmover CU, Oswego, Ill., awarded Teen Investment Program college scholarships totaling $4,000 to four local high school students. The tiered scholarships were $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 each for third place and fourth place.
