The back-and-forth battle between banks and credit unions has been about more than tax status and business lending limits. It has also been about creative advertising.
The latest print ad campaign by the Independent Community Bankers of America features a large image of Benjamin Franklin with his nose plugged by a clothespin and his famous quotation: "Half a Truth is Often a Great Lie."
The ad, which has run in Politico, The Hill, Roll Call and CQ Today, illustrates banks' argument that lawmakers should not support legislation raising the cap on credit unions' business lending activities while credit unions are still tax-exempt. "Something doesn't smell quite right," the ad says.
