Alabama Borough Considering Outside Debt Collector

Dublin, Ala., an unincorporated borough in Montgomery County, is reviewing whether to hire a collection agency to pursue nearly $100,000 in overdue water, sewer and trash accounts.

Council members on Monday were addressed by Paul Adamshick of GH Harris Associates, a collection agency located in Dallas, Pa. Adamshick said the agency would send letters to delinquent accountholders as well as go door-to-door to seek payments. He estimated that collection rates would range from 15% to 70% depending on various factors, including whether the bulk of the debtors are retirees. Council member Gary Mast said Dublin is owed $98,000, with $46,000 in liens on properties. Council members discussed accepting payments via credit card, in addition to its current methods, to help make payment options easier for residents.  The next council meeting is set for March 14. It wasn’t immediately clear if the council will vote at that time on hiring GH Harris.
