Atlanta Cabs to Get Payment Devices

VeriFone Systems Inc. said last week that it has begun installing passenger-activated payment and multimedia information systems in taxis in Atlanta.

The initial installations in Atlanta Checker Cab Co. vehicles began Friday and will continue over the next 60 to 90 days.

Passengers in equipped taxis will be able to swipe their cards, rather than handing them to drivers.

"Atlanta Checker Cabs was one of the first taxi companies to embrace credit card payments over 30 years ago, and now we're first in the area to put the complete payment process in the hands of passengers," the company's president, Rick Hewatt, said in a press release.

Checker Cab operates about 200 vehicles.
