Bangkok Seeks Smart Card System

Bangkok Smartcard System Co. Ltd. has hired the Australian payments technology vendor Vix Erg Pty. Ltd. to design and deliver a smart card transaction-processing service for the city's mass transit system.

Vix Erg will base the Thai system on its Mass payments technology, which it has implemented in 11 cities in five countries. The most notable Mass project is in Beijing, where the Metro Transit Automated Clearing Centre uses it to process more than 9 million transit transactions per day.

"The system will initially provide support for an integrated payments [service] for the Bangkok Mass Transit System Co. Ltd. and Bangkok Metro Co. Ltd. transit systems," Nelson Leung, Bangkok Smartcard's executive director, said in a July 28 press release. "Over time, the system will be extended to provide support for other transit modes and to support micropayments generally in Bangkok."

Bangkok Metro operates Bangkok's underground metro system called the Mass Rapid Transit, while Bangkok Mass Transit System operates the BTS Skytrain, an elevated rapid transit system.
