Barclays Promotes a U.S. Card Executive

Barclays PLC said Thursday it had promoted Joe Purzycki to chief operating officer of its U.S. credit card business.

Mr. Purzycki joined Barclays in 2005 as managing director for customer care and bank operations. Before that he had been a card executive at several banking companies, including JPMorgan Chase & Co., First USA, and MBNA Corp.

From 2000 to 2001 he was chief administrative officer of Juniper Financial Corp., which Barclays purchased in 2004 to form its current U.S. cards business.

"As Barclays continues growing its U.S. market presence and customer base, Joe will play a prominent leadership role in driving Barclays to the top 10 of U.S. card issuers," Lloyd M. Wirschba, the chief executive of Barclays' U.S. card business in Wilmington, Del., said in a press release.

Barclays says it is the fastest growing card issuer in the United States. In May it said its U.S. card business might generate a profit of $150 million this year, instead of breaking even, as the company had predicted earlier. The business lost $81 million last year.

In April several senior executives who had been part of Juniper left Barclays.
