Barnett elects railroad exec to board.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Barnett Banks Inc. elected to its board of directors the president of the nation's largest railroad company.

Alvin R. "Pete" Carpenter, 52, heads CSX Transportation Inc., which operates nearly 33,000 miles of track in 20 states.

Charles E. Rice, chairman and chief executive of $38 billion-asset Barnett, noted that Mr. Carpenter is also a significant civic leader in north Florida. He is on the advisory board of the University of Florida College of Business and is a board member at several corporations.

Mr. Carpenter is Barnett's 16th director.
