California CU Expands Same-Day Payments

The San Diego County Credit Union is licensing new software that allows it to make same-day payments available through the same service as traditional Web bill payment, as well as create a simple link to myriad other automated payments to make user navigation and access easier.

"Giving our customers payment solutions within one unified platform is extremely important … and this additional service allows them to choose the best option to fit their needs," said Teresa Halleck, president and chief executive of the credit union. "For example, our bill-pay platform members can choose to set up recurring payments, schedule them as needed into the future, select same-day or next-day payment options, or make person-to-person payments through our ZashPay service."

Halleck said it is too early in the deployment to know uptake among the credit union's members.

Bills available for same-day payment include auto, mortgage, credit card, utility, phone and other common household bills. Members can select the same-day delivery option as part of the normal payment scheduling process. The $5 billion-asset, 28-branch credit union serves San Diego, Riverside and Orange counties and has 215,000 members.

The credit union's payment expansion is being powered by Fiserv Inc.'s CheckFree RXP money movement platform, which itself is being upgraded to support account-to-account transfers and same-day bill payments. These new functions will integrate with bill payment and person-to-person payment to create a single suite accessible from the institution's main Web page or mobile device. Fiserv says more than 65 institutions have signed up to use the same-day bill-payment capability, and more than 60 have agreed to use the account-to-account transfers.
