Capital Briefs: Calif. Credit Union Can Convert to a Thrift

Kaiser Permanente Federal Credit Union in Pasadena, Calif., won permission Friday to convert to a thrift.

The change allows the institution, to be renamed Kaiser Federal, to expand its offerings to the general public. As a credit union, Kaiser served 34,000 members who are current and former employees of Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, Permanente Medical Group Inc., and Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc. Kaiser Federal will operate as a mutual thrift.

There are 39 nonbanks - eight securities firms, 20 insurers, four manufacturers, and seven others-with applications pending before the Office of Thrift Supervision.
