Card briefs: Buypass Processed 1.2M EBT Transactions in Month

ATLANTA - Buypass Corp. announced it processed 1.2 million electronic benefits transfer transactions in August, less than one year after it processed its first.

Buypass also rolled out EBT processing for New Jersey, Maryland, and Utah merchants in late September. The company now processes such transactions in a total of six states, including Minnesota, North Carolina, and Texas.

Buypass processing lets merchants accept electronic benefits transfers as an additional payment type on their current terminals, so they needn't buy separate EBT terminals. Also, Buypass acts as an interface with the state's designated authorizer of such transfers, helping merchants with EBT regulations and operations.

Some Buypass merchants have reported up to a 10% increase in sales since they began accepting electronic benefits transfers. Others say such transactions have accounted for more than 50% of the total traffic in their store.

Buypass, which is based in Atlanta, is a subsidiary of Electronic Payment Services Inc., the company that runs the MAC network.
