The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has filed a lawsuit in federal court against a web of payday lending companies, alleging that they collected money that consumers did not owe and falsely threatened consumers with lawsuits and imprisonment.

Cash America International, a payday lender in Fort Worth, Texas, has named Brent Stuart chief executive.
Stuart is currently the company's president and chief operating officer. He will assume the new role on Nov. 1, following the retirement of CEO Daniel Feehan.
Stuart joined Cash America in 2008 and has also been its senior vice president of operations for U.S. retail services storefront lending, and a regional vice president.
Cash America previously announced that Feehan will remain with Cash America until April 2020 as a non-officer adviser. He will become executive chairman on Nov. 1 and remain in that role until October 2016, when he will become non-executive chairman.
Jack Daugherty, Cash America's founder and chairman, will remain chairman until Nov. 1, when he will retire from that position but remain on the board.
