The mobile banking technology vendor ClairMail Inc. is planning to offer a remote capture service that its bank clients can offer to customers, using software from Mitek Systems Inc.

ClairMail, of Novato, Calif., said Wednesday that it would integrate Mitek's Mobile Deposit software into its application, enabling consumers to deposit checks by photographing them with their phones' built-in cameras and sending the image to their banks.

A handful of banks are already offering or testing remote capture services through mobile phones. USAA Federal Savings Bank rolled out the first mobile deposit service in August, and Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union in Live Oak, Texas, has said it plans to follow suit early next year. Bank of America Corp. is also evaluating the technology.

"Financial institutions around the world continue to realize that mobile is the strategic channel of the future," Pete Daffern, ClairMail's chief executive, said in a press release.
