Commonwealth Bancorp Names Executive

Commonwealth Bancorp, Valley Forge, Pa., has named three executives to key management positions with both the parent company and Commonwealth Bank, its lead subsidiary.

Patrick J. Ward, 40, was named president and chief operating officer. Chairman and chief executive Charles H. Meacham had been serving as chief operating officer.

Mr. Ward had been senior vice president and chief financial officer since joining Commonwealth in 1992. Earlier, he was vice president of wholesale banking at Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh.

Charles Johnston succeeds Mr. Ward as senior vice president and chief financial officer. He had been chief financial officer and treasurer at TFC Enterprises Inc., a finance company in Norfolk, Va. Before that, he was the treasury division manager and director of investor relations at Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh.

David Griest was named senior vice president and chief information officer, succeeding Robert Lambert. Mr. Lambert left to pursue other interests, according to a spokesman for the thrift.

Mr. Griest, who joined Commonwealth in 1989, was vice president of information systems. He had been vice president of corporate information services and systems at Philadelphia Savings Fund Society, before it was acquired by Mellon Bank.
