The National Credit Union Administration has notified members of New Horizons Community Credit Union, a troubled Denver credit union it took over a year ago, of a potential data breach involving their personal financial information.
The data was on a laptop computer stolen from a consultant doing due diligence for Bellco Credit Union, another Denver institution reviewing whether to buy the $300 million-asset New Horizons.
The NCUA said Wednesday that the computer contained loan records for about 9,000 of the credit union's 19,500 members. John McKechnie, an NCUA spokesman, said there is no indication that the thief knew the members' information was on it. "The information is encrypted with several layers of security," Mr. McKechnie told The Credit Union Journal.
New Horizons lost $20.1 million last year.
