This time, the Riverwoods, Ill., card company is promoting a contest that asks fans of Discover's Facebook page to design a patriotic-themed Discover card.

Fans may vote for their favorite design, and for every 10 votes Discover donates $1 to the charity Operation Homefront.

"Our social media effort is very important to us," a representative said in an interview. "We use it to engage our card members and get them involved with a good cause, and we can potentially attract new card members."

The contest opens for design-entry submissions beginning June 21. To enter, visitors to Discover's Facebook page use the card company's "Graffiti" digital-drawing tool to create their design. The deadline for submissions through the Facebook page is July 4.

Starting July 5, fans may vote for their favorite card designs through July 15, leading up to the winning design announcement on July 25.

Earlier this year, Discover held Facebook contests that featured a school giveaway, which donated $25,000 to a deserving Chicago public school; a day with the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup; and "Feel the Earn," which enabled cardholders to win gift cards for sharing their best stories on how they used their cash-back rewards.
