EMC to Acquire Silver Tail Systems

EMC (EMC) has agreed to buy Silver Tail Systems, a privately held company that helps clients fend off fraudsters and Web-based attackers.

The deal would expand the identity-protection and verification products offered by RSA, the security division of EMC. Silver Tail’s products analyze transactions and hackers’ behavior, EMC said Tuesday.

“The industry is well beyond the point of providing effective security using static, perimeter-point tools that fail to keep up with dynamic cyber attackers,” Art Coviello, executive vice president of EMC, said in a news release. “Customers need better intelligence, analytics and the ability to respond in real time.”

Silver Tail’s “Web-session intelligence” gathers data to detect security threats, fraud, insider threats and other malicious activity.

The financial terms of the deal, which is expected to close by yearend, were not disclosed. The deal is not expected to have a material effect on EMC’s earnings for 2012.
