The new tech is designed to thwart breaches by protecting data "at rest," which refers to information stored on internally managed databases or data warehouses-often including consumer and internal enterprise information that can be vulnerable to theft or breach.
Playing in a tech field that includes security firms such as Buslink and Imation, Enova hopes to protect USB drives by automatically and transparently encrypting all data that's written to the drives, while decrypting all data that's read out from the drive. The service is available for all solid state dries, thumb drives, Blu-ray, DVD+/- RW, CD-R drives and card reader media such as SD (secure digital, or a memory format for cards) and MMC (multimedia cards). It also creates a "Read Only" function on the USB drive that protects users from viruses, spyware and malware.
In a press release, Charles Kolodgy, research vice president of security products for IDC said: "As the frequency and severity of data breaches grows, endpoint security is increasingly critical to consumers and organizations looking to secure their sensitive information. External storage devices in particular, such as USB hard drives and thumb drives, are often unprotected and therefore vulnerable to data theft or device loss."
