NEW ENGLAND

State Street Research and Management Co., a Boston subsidiary of MetLife Inc., has hired David C. Reilly as the director of institutional marketing communications.

Mr. Reilly was a senior vice president and the director of investment communications at Prudential Investments. Before that he had been a vice president and a portfolio manager at Eaton Vance Management. Still earlier he had been a vice president and a senior fixed-income analyst at Scudder, Stevens & Clark.


Manulife Financial Corp. of Toronto has named James D. Gallagher, the chief legal counsel for its U.S. division and the president of Manufacturers Life Insurance Co., to also be the president of its Manufacturers Investment Trust.The new job puts him in charge of Manulife's retail and subadvised money management relationships and its investment management services department.

He is based in Boston and reports to John D. Desprez, executive vice president of Manulife's U.S. division.

Mr. Gallagher has worked for Manulife's U.S. law department since he joined the company seven years ago. Before that he had been a vice president and the associate general counsel for Canadian operations at Prudential Insurance Company of America in Newark, N.J.; still earlier he had been its assistant general counsel for Canadian operations.

MIDWEST

Metavante Corp., a Milwaukee vendor of financial services technology, has promoted Michael D. Hayford to chief financial officer.

He remains the executive vice president of corporate development and continues to report to Joseph L. Delgado, president and chief executive officer of the Marshall & Illsley Corp. subsidiary.

Mr. Hayford had been the executive vice president of corporate development since 1998. Before joining the company in 1992 he had worked at Andersen Consulting LLP (now Accenture) for 10 years.

MIDDLE ATLANTIC

UBS Warburg has hired Thomas R. Osborne as a managing director in the energy and power investment banking group.

He is based in New York and reports to Walter S. Hulse, head of power investment banking.

Mr. Osborne was a director in the utilities investment banking group at Credit Suisse First Boston Corp., where he worked for five years.


PNC Financial Services Group Inc. in Pittsburgh has elected president and chief executive officer James E. Rohr as its chairman.He succeeded Thomas H. O'Brien, 64, who retired in February after 13 years as chairman.

Mr. Rohr, 52, has been PNC's president since 1992 and its CEO since last year, when Mr. O'Brien retired from that post. He has been with PNC since 1972.


Bear Stearns & Co. in New York has hired Jonathan F. Foster as the senior managing director in charge of mergers and acquisitions activity in the industrial products and services sector.Mr. Foster was the executive vice president and the chief financial officer of Toysrus.com LLC for two years. Before that he had been a managing director in the M&A group at Lazard Freres & Co. LLC, where he worked for a year.

Still earlier he had been an executive at Morgan Grenfell Group PLC, and before that a staff accountant at Price Waterhouse & Co.


Rothschild North America Inc. in New York has hired Jeff Martin as a managing director specializing in advising companies in mergers and acquisitions in the company's corporate finance group.Mr. Martin, 46, worked in the East Coast M&A practice at the San Francisco-based Thomas Weisel Partners LLC for three years. Before that he had been a senior investment banker at Merrill Lynch & Co., where he worked for 16 years and held managing directorships in its M&A group, its direct investment group, and its Latin American leveraged finance group.
