Executive Changes: Arshad Zakaria Named Chief Risk Manager at Merrill Lynch

Merrill Lynch & Co. in New York has promoted Arshad R. Zakaria to senior vice president, head of corporate risk management, and a seat on its management committee.

He succeeded Richard A. Dunn, who is now president of Merrill's securities services division, a new business group.

Mr. Zakaria was head of the global corporate finance group in investment banking, with the rank of managing director. He joined the company in 1987 and has also worked in its corporate and institutional client group.

Jeffrey C. Neal, chairman of Merrill's corporate finance group, is to assume Mr. Zakaria's post as head of the investment bank's global corporate finance group.


NEW ENGLAND

Mellon Financial Corp. has promoted Joanne Y. Jaxtimer, its director of corporate affairs for New England, to first vice president.Ms. Jaxtimer is in charge of New England community and government relations, charitable giving, public and media relations, employee communications, and events management for the Pittsburgh banking company. She is based in Boston.

She joined Mellon in 1995 after being director of marketing and public relations at Boston University Medical Center. Before that she was senior vice president of external affairs at University Bank in Newton, Mass. Still earlier she was community relations manager at Bank of Boston, now part of FleetBoston Financial Corp.


MIDDLE ATLANTIC

UBS Warburg in Stamford, Conn. - formerly Warburg Dillon Read - has hired Jon Bass to be head of fixed-income sales and a managing director.He is to report to David Shulman, head of U.S. fixed-income distribution for the Americas.

Mr. Bass was a managing director in the credit sales division of Salomon Smith Barney.

UBS Warburg is a subsidiary of the Swiss banking company UBS AG.


Tillinghast-Towers Perrin in New York has hired a former Fleet executive and a former Chase Manhattan executive as consultants for its financial services practice.Victor J. Hoffman is a database marketing consultant who specializes in customer relationship management. He managed a 20-person group that gave information-based decision support to the former Fleet Financial Group's marketing and risk units. He has 20 years of financial services consulting experience.

Keh L. Kwek is a distribution planning consultant. He was a vice president of strategic planning for the financial services distribution division at Chase Manhattan Bank. He has 10 years of financial services experience.


WEST

Sanwa Bank in Los Angeles has promoted William D. Snyder to senior vice president and manager of its international department.He was a vice president and manager of international trade finance. The new job also puts him in charge of international operations, global payment services, and international product development.

Mr. Snyder came to Sanwa in 1997 from another Japanese-owned bank, Union Bank of California, where he was a vice president and manager of the trade services sales support department. He has 28 years of banking experience.
