Finding Picosearch a Winner

Landrum Co., a bank holding company based in Columbia, Mo., says it likes what it is getting from Picosearch LLC.

Landrum hired Picosearch a year ago to provide the search function for its banks' Web sites. Landrum operates Landmark Bank in Oklahoma and Texas, First National Bank and Trust across Missouri, and First National Bank in southern Missouri.

"We think it's a nice feature to have for our customers," said Eunice P. Harris, a Landrum vice president, in a recent interview.

The $1.1 billion-asset Landrum designs its banks' Web sites to be easy to navigate, but it is reassuring to give customers and prospects a way to find specific information, Ms. Harris said. "I can tell that customers are using it when they need it."

The cost is low and the vendor reindexes each site every few days, Ms. Harris said.

Carl Schroeder, the director of search technologies at Picosearch, of Cambridge, Mass., said his company primarily serves operators of small Web sites. Its search results can be tuned to promote certain pages above others - such as an entry page to the investment or insurance sections - and customers can buy "private domains" so their names, rather than the vendor's, appear in the Web browser's address bar.
