FTC Releases Video to Assist Identity-Theft Victims

The Federal Trade Commission has released an online video to aid victims of identity theft.

The FTC's new video, "Helping Victims of Identity Theft," explains how to recognize and prevent identity theft and guides victims through the steps they need to take to repair its damage. It promotes the "Guide for Assisting Identity Theft Victims," a handbook for social workers, lawyers and others who work with identity-theft victims, which the agency released last year.

The FTC has made identity theft one of its central consumer-rights issues, distributing more than two million publications on the subject in 2012, it said Monday in a news release announcing the new video. The agency said it receives more complaints about identity theft than any other consumer issue, and estimated that nine million Americans fall victim to identity theft every year.
