Gemalto Matches a Revenue Record

The Amsterdam security firm Gemalto NV said Thursday that a boost from its smart card operations helped its fourth-quarter revenue match a record it set a year earlier.

Fourth-quarter revenue from the secure transaction business grew 5% from a year earlier, to $151.4 million, Gemalto said.

Full-year revenue from the business increased 11%, to $583.2 million.

Gemalto said it benefited in part from a spike in the use of contactless cards in Europe that use the Europay, MasterCard, Visa security format.

It also said it should benefit from a mandate by the card brands that European issuers upgrade the security in their cards by 2011.

Gemalto said its fourth-quarter revenue was flat, at $620 million. Full-year revenue grew 6%, to $2.2 billion.
