The $874 million-asset Appalachian said Monday that Mr. Moss' duties would be assumed by both Tracy Newton, the company's chief executive officer, and Keith Hales, its chief financial officer.

Mr. Moss, formerly a director of the bank consulting firm Ceto & Associates in Atlanta, joined Appalachian in 2005 to help it develop an expansion strategy. He helped spearhead the chartering of Appalachian Community Bank FSB in Murphy, N.C., which enabled the company to expand into North Carolina and Tennessee.
