GMAC Cuts Include Ditech Jobs

GMAC Inc. said it plans to cut more than 550 jobs and close three offices.

Employees were told Wednesday about plans to cut 313 jobs at the Residential Capital LLC unit's offices in Costa Mesa, Calif., and Charlotte, according to GMAC spokeswoman Gina Proia. The Charlotte mortgage office will be shut, and about 30 people will remain in Costa Mesa, she said.

Auto-loan servicing offices in Charlotte and Knoxville, Tenn., are to close, at a loss of 241 jobs, she said.

Investors have pressed GMAC to stop supporting ResCap, its home lending unit whose Costa Mesa office houses Ditech, an online lender.

The Ditech brand is to remain intact, with work being absorbed at other GMAC offices, Proia said.

ResCap's current work force was not specified. It employed about 6,100 people at the end of 2008.

GMAC listed about 22,700 employees at that time, including about 1,500 jobs at ResCap that were to be trimmed in 2009's first quarter.

The reductions "are part of getting our structural costs in line with business activities," Proia said. ResCap continues to make home loans through its own staff and correspondent lenders, she said.

GMAC is scheduled to report fourth-quarter results today.
