Google Wallet Attracts Another Issuer, Barclaycard

Barclaycard US says it will work with Google Inc. to support the Google Wallet mobile payment system.

Barclaycard, a unit of Barclays PLC, is the third issuer to work with Google Wallet since the product's launch last year and the second since Google made changes to its technology last month to make it easier for issuers to sign up. Google's first partner was Citigroup and its second was Discover Financial Services.

Barclaycard was also the first issuer to work with Isis, the mobile-payments venture formed by AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile.

Google Wallet now allows consumers to enroll any card directly with the mobile wallet. The card appears as an option within the mobile-payment app, allowing consumers to use it for payments at the point of sale with an Android smartphone that has a built-in Near Field Communication chip. About six smartphone models and Google's Nexus 7 tablet support Google Wallet payments.

"Google Wallet is a compelling solution for consumers that makes doing business faster and more rewarding and will make the experience with Barclaycard even more simple and easy to use," says Dekkers Davidson, head of mobile commerce for Barclaycard US, in a press release.

Barclaycard will promote the Google Wallet system first through its L.L. Bean and US Airways cobranded card programs. Barclaycard plans to tie Google Wallet to additional card programs in the future.
