Shares in prepaid card issuer Green Dot (GDOT) tumbled Friday amid fears that the firm would need to keep spending heavily to stave off new competitors, such as T-Mobile.

Chief executive officer Steve Streit promised during a Thursday conference call that Green Dot will keep a tighter leash on costs in 2014 after the company made extraordinarily large investments in the second half of last year.
