Hypercom Gets German Terminal Deal

A major German drugstore chain has agreed to buy Hypercom Corp. payment terminals.

The Phoenix terminal maker said Tuesday that Dirk Rossmann GmbH is purchasing more than 5,000 of its Artema Hybrid devices. The retailer began installing them two weeks ago, and is expected to complete the rollout by mid-2011.

Hypercom said that more than 250,000 Artema terminals are already in use in Germany. The point of sale device can handle standard magnetic stripe cards and payment cards with a security chip that meets the EMV Integrated Circuit Card Specifications.

Many countries are in the process of shifting to EMV, or have already done so. The format offers improved transaction security, but U.S. payments companies have not announced any plans to move to EMV.
