IBM Cuts Price of Mainframe Banking Software

International Business Machines Corp. said it has changed the pricing of its S/390 mainframe software to make it cheaper for customers with heavier computing work loads.

Nine pricing options will be reduced to two in the next 18 months. The changes "make it more cost-effective to add more work loads and applications on the S/390," said David R. Carlucci, general manager of the S/390 division. "Customers are asking us for help in managing the cost and deployment of business-critical work loads. Our goal is to give customers, on average, price/performance improvements of up to 20% a year."

Banks are "some of our largest customers worldwide," he said, and can expect to benefit from the reductions.
