The 30-year fixed-rate conforming mortgage averaged 7.76% for the week ended Sept. 24, a slight decline from 7.82% the week before, according to Freddie Mac. A year earlier, the average was 6.64%.

The average for 15-year fixed-rate mortgages was 7.40%, down 3 basis points from the week before. A year ago, it averaged 6.32%.

The rate for one-year adjustable-rate mortgages averaged 6.19% for the week ended Sept. 24, dropping from an average of 6.22% the week before. Freddie Mac chief economist Robert Van Order said that the agency is predicting that rates will stay between 7.5% and 8% through yearend.
