Associated Banc-Corp on Tuesday named a vice chairman and 16-year Associated veteran, Robert Gallagher, to be president and chief operating officer.

Mr. Gallagher, 60, will take over the president's duties from H.B. Conlon. Mr. Conlon, 63, remains chairman and chief executive officer. The move positions Mr. Gallagher as the No. 2 executive at the $10.6 billion- asset company. Presidents of Associated's eight banking regions will report to Mr. Gallagher.

Associated merged with First Financial Corp. of Stevens Point, Wis., last year.

"The top of the newly merged company is clearly being run by the Associated side," said analyst Gerry Cronin of McDonald Securities. - Brett Chase
