In Brief: Bank One Installs 30 ATMs for the Blind

CHICAGO — Bank One Corp. said Wednesday that it had installed the first 30 of 130 talking automated teller machines that it plans to roll out this year for blind customers.

The machines have been placed in the Chicago area and in Columbus, Ohio. The 100 additional machines will be located in these and other markets.

At the special ATMs, customers use a standard set of earphones to receive voice prompts that take them step by step through a transaction. The earphones can be obtained from the Bank One branches where the machines are located.

Bank One employees will help customers get acquainted with the modified ATMs, and audio users will hear a brief “orientation” at the ATMs.
