In Brief: BB&T to Use First Data Check Service

BB&T Corp. has agreed to use First Data Corp.'s Star Chek Direct check debit and verification service.

The service, introduced last year, is designed to reduce check fraud losses and processing costs, streamline the administration of check processing, and generate income for banks that use it, First Data, of Denver, said Wednesday.

In a press release, Scott Qualls, a senior vice president and the deposit access products manager at BB&T, called Star Check Direct an alternative to paper and automated clearing house check processing "that is efficient for merchants."

The debit part of the service can be used for retail point of sale transactions and telephone and Internet bill payments. The verification part can also be used to assess risk for processing paper checks or automated clearing house electronic checks.

BB&T, of Winston-Salem, N.C., is also a member of First Data's Star debit network, a spokeswoman for First Data said.
