The automated teller machine maker Diebold Inc. is closing an assembly plant in Danville, Va.
The North Canton, Ohio, company said Friday that production at the plant, which opened in 1997, will be phased out by the end of the third quarter. The factory assembles modules for ATM components and produces banking security equipment. It has about 110 employees.
The closing will result in charges of about 2 cents a share in the second quarter and 1 cent in the third quarter, Diebold said.
Most of the Danville site's activities will be integrated into other U.S. Diebold facilities. Some will be contracted to a third-party provider in the United States.
George S. Mayes Jr., Diebold's vice president of global manufacturing, said in a press release that the company's Opteva ATM line, introduced in 2003, "is more efficient to produce and therefore requires less manufacturing capacity."
