In Brief: FleetBoston ATMs Pitch N.Y. Musicals

NEW YORK - FleetBoston Financial Corp. is displaying previews of Broadway shows on 29 automated teller machines in New York.

FleetBoston, which says it is the first banking company to introduce third-party advertising on New York City ATMs, began the test May 24 and is to run it through the end of June. The select terminals are showing scenes from "Rent," "Annie Get Your Gun," "Swing," and "Chicago."

Through an agreement with Theatre.com, Fleet ATM users - both accountholders and noncustomers - can get up to 38% off the price of tickets to these shows. The ATMs dispense receipts with an Internet address for the promotion, and users buy the tickets online.

Sixteen of the 29 ATM screens are equipped with full-motion video and audio capabilities; the remaining 13 display static advertisements. The full-motion terminals run a continuous two-minute loop of footage, showing 30-second previews for each of the four shows. The ad stops once the ATM card is inserted, so the advertising does not lengthen transaction time, according to Fleet.
