In Brief: Health-Care Plans From National Penn

National Penn Bank in Boyertown, Pa., unveiled two programs Tuesday that are designed to help customers pay their health-care bills.

The subsidiary of $2.5 billion-asset National Penn Bancshares is offering a Medicare supplemental insurance plan and a discount program for prescription drugs, dental exams, eyeglasses, contact lenses, and chiropractic care.

Monumental Life Insurance Co. in Baltimore is underwriting the insurance, which will be sold by mail.

A local health-care organization will provide the discounted medical services and products and will run the discount program, which is called Health Aid. Participants will be able to subscribe only at National Penn branches and at check cashers that are commercial customers of the bank, said Michael Wummer, the bank's senior vice president. Discounts will go as high as 50%, he said.
