increased funding for rental housing, citing a "large and growing" gap between the availability of affordable rental units and the number of families who need it.
Unveiling a report by the Housing and Urban Development Department at a press conference, Mr. Cuomo called on Congress to approve a budget request to double the number of rental-assistance vouchers to 100,000. The report said less rental housing is available to families with incomes at or below 30% of the median in their areas, while the number of those families has increased to 25% of all renters. The report also revealed that rents are increasing at twice the rate of inflation.
