In Brief: National City Giving Up Bid for Processor

National City Corp. said its $57 million tender offer for National Processing Inc.'s outstanding common shares, which expired Friday, was its final offer.

National Processing, which wants $16.50 a share, rejected the bank's $9.50-per-share bid, offered July 13.

The transaction processor was spun off National City in August 1996 at $16.50 a share. National City still owns 88%.

National Processing, the second-largest processor of merchant credit and debit card transactions, has struggled to improve earnings amid increasing competition.
