In Brief: People's of Conn. Expects CEO Back

People's Bank in Bridgeport, Conn., said Monday that its president and chief executive, John A. Klein, has undergone successful cancer surgery and is expected to return to work in early October.

The $11 billion-asset company did not disclose the type of cancer or the nature of the surgery. It said that Mr. Klein had sent an e-mail to employees saying that he is doing well and that he would be working from home for several weeks.

People's, with 155 branches, has the No. 2 deposit share in Connecticut, behind Bank of America Corp. People's stock closed up 3% in heavy trading Monday, at $36.
