In Brief: Providian Adds Two Marketing Execs

SAN FRANCISCO - Providian Financial Corp. is beefing up its marketing department with two new executives and may add more to other departments, according to an internal memo.

Jack Webber will join Providian in mid-July from Fleet Credit Card Services as an executive vice president and the head of new product development, according to a memo to managers from Warren Wilcox, Providian's vice chairman, marketing and strategic planning. Mr. Webber will also head Providian's credit card shopper, GetSmart.

Mr. Wilcox and Joseph W. Saunders, Providian's chairman, chief executive and president, also worked for the FleetBoston Financial Corp. unit. MasterCard International's Ellen Rosenfels will join Providian on Friday as executive vice president of customer development. Ms. Rosenfels will be responsible for building "core card member relationships, as well as cross-selling membership products," the memo said.
