In Brief: Senate Panel Approves SEC Nominee

WASHINGTON - In an 18-to-0 vote Tuesday the Senate Banking Committee approved the appointment of Harvey Pitt to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

If approved by the full Senate, Mr. Pitt, a securities attorney, would fill a term that lasts until June 5, 2007. President Bush has said he plans to elevate Mr. Pitt to SEC chairman once he is confirmed.
